Dutch sales of ASC-certified seafood increased by a third

Last year, ASC-certified seafood products in Dutch supermarkets were €200 million. This is an increase of 33% on 2016, which means that €50m more was spent on responsibly sourced seafood last year. These numbers are the outcome of a research by the company IRI (Information Resources, Incorporated).

Seafood is leading with certified products

Among Dutch shoppers, there is a wider trend of increasing awareness of the importance of certification. Seafood is leading the way, which explains the robust growth in ASC-certified sales.

In 2017, of every €7 spent on food in Dutch grocery stores €1 was spent on the purchase of products with a certification mark. For seafood products this number was even higher: 66% was spent on products with an ASC or MSC certification mark.

Figures show that for producers and retailers there is still great growth potential in the Netherlands for responsible seafood.
